House Approves H. R.10 - Comprehensive Retirement Security and Pension
Reform Act of 2001
The House overwhelmingly approved H.R.10 yesterday raising the
amount of money Americans can save annually in tax-favored accounts
such as IRAs, part of a broad effort to help workers better prepare
for retirement. The Senate votes next on a similar bill S.631.
National
Suicide Prevention Goals Announced
On May 2, 2001
Surgeon General David Satcher joined a coalition of public and private
groups to unveil a national blueprint of goals and objectives to
prevent suicide, the eighth leading cause of death in the United
States. The document released today establishes 11 goals and 68
measurable objectives for public and private sector involvement to
prevent suicides and reduce suicide attempts, which take the lives of
more than 30,000 Americans a year. The goals and objectives are part
of the department's ongoing effort to develop a National Strategy for
Suicide Prevention.

10 Investment Scams” List Released by State Securities Regulators
State securities regulators released a list of the top 10 investment
scams they are combating. New to the third annual list are risky
payphone and ATM investments, often sold by independent life insurance
agents, and so-called “callable” certificates of deposit sold to
older Americans despite their 10- to 20-year maturities.

Series of Reports to Monitor Health of Older Americans
The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center
for Health Statistics (NCHS) has developed a new series of reports to
focus attention on some of the most important health issues facing
today's generation of older Americans.
