President Bush's Faith-Based and Community Initiative, the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services announced proposed regulations to clarify the rights

Federal "Report on Carcinogens" Lists Estrogen Therapy, Ultraviolet, Wood Dust
December 12, 2002 - The federal government today
published its biennial "Report on Carcinogens", adding steroidal estrogens used
in estrogen replacement therapy and oral contraceptives to its official list of
"known" human carcinogens. This and 15 other new listings bring the total of
substances in the report, "known" or "reasonably anticipated" to pose a cancer
risk, to 228.

Heart's Irregular Rhythm Provides No Benefit over Controlling Heart Rate
December 5, 2002 - A study supported by the
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes
of Health found that the "heart rhythm" strategy for the common heart rhythm
disorder atrial fibrillation (AF) prevents no more deaths than the
alternative, often secondary, approach to treatment which merely controls
the rate at which the heart beats -- and may have some disadvantages,
including more hospitalizations and adverse drug effects.

FDA
Approves Osteoporosis Treatment
December 2, 2002 -
FDA has approved teriparatide for the treatment of osteoporosis in
postmenopausal women who are at high risk for having a fracture. The drug is
also approved to increase bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal
osteoporosis who are at high risk for fracture.
